Diaper Rashes Problem For 20 Months Old, Tried Various Cremes But No Help. Can A Biopsy Be Done On Diaper Rash ?

Hello. My daughter is 20 months old and for the past 9 months, we have struggled with diaper rashes. We can't connect it to anything in her diet. Her pediatrician has prescribed her 8 different cremes, all of which haven't done anything. He recently referred us to a dermatologist. Our first visit with her, she prescribed another creme and told me to use it for a week and come back for a follow up. I did. The creme did nothing. She put her on it for another week and said if it still didn't touch it, they would do a biopsy on it. Her bottom is now red, and we go back to the dermatologist tomorrow, and the creme has done nothing this past week. How will they do a biopsy on a diaper rash, and what are the possibly outcomes of the results?

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

I can understand your dilemma. However I suggest that you stop using diapers for a few days and leave the child dry. By diapers I understand that you mean the disposable diapers available in the market. These diapers prevent air circulation and can cause problems.

In case you are using home made nappies then are you giving a final rinse in some antiseptic solution like Dettol or Savlon. Unfortunately the soap in these "antiseptic" solutions is the culprit to give rise to a rash. Stop this practice and notice.

Even if a biopsy it required the dermatologist are competent to take a sample for diagnosis.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter an early recovery.
