Diagnosed with urinary retention, bladder distension most likely due to neurological reasons. Recommended catheter. Suggestions?

I have recently been diagnosed with urinary retention and bladder distension. All prostate and related tests are clear. Most likely cause is neurological from past lumbar surgery and degenerative discs. Doctor has recommended catheter therapy, but not much explained. Will I end up carrying around a bag while wearing catheter?!? Nervous!

Thanks for your query.Based on the fact that you have posted it appears that you have retention of urine due to Neurogenic Bladder. In any neurological disorder Bladder is the first organ to get affected and last to get recovered. It takes long time for recovery. It will be better if you get catheterised to drain the bladder continuously.
In view of the long duration required for recovery i would suggest you to drain Bladder through supra pubic Cauterization (SPC) rather than putting a catheter through Urethra which is cumbersome and painful.
Consult qualified Urologist for further management.
