Diagnosed With Terminal Lung Cancer, Chest Pain, Stomach Pain, Back Pain, Swollen Feet, Moody, Aggressive. What Can Be Done?

My brother has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, he was told he had six to twelve weeks left,he is on week eight, he has constan pain I his chest stomachs and back and now his feet are swollen I am worried this is the beginning of the end, he only has a nurse visit once a week and he is very moody and can be aggressive so we are frightened to ask him anything in case we cause him more stress. I would like suggestions as to what we can do to help he is in stoke and we are in Kent which does not help although we are visiting Saturday. When is the best time for him to g to the hospice and general advice. it does seem cruel to us that he has very short time left and only has a nurse once a week and he is living on his own.

Hi,
Thanks for your query.
lung cancer in stage 4 needs only palliative therapy to alleviate symptoms like pain, breathlessnees etc.
Pain can be relieved by taking opioid analgesics like morphine. swelling can be secondary to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). He can be prophylactically put on subcutaneous low molecular weight heparins like enoxaparin. Go for a doppler ultrasound of leg to rule out this.
I can understand your concern, but sometimes we are helpless. All that he need is affection and symptom relief. Don't be tense especially before him, otherwise his symptoms will aggravate....

Best wishes
