Diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease. Had abortion. Severe cramping. will this cause serious damage ?

I had an abortion two weeks ago, a few nights ago my boyfriend and I had intercourse and 4 hours later I woke up with severe cramping. When I went to the doctor the next morning they told me I had pelvic inflammatory disease. I am very concerned now that I have done some research and I was wondering if I've had it now for a week or two if that will cause serious damage already to my reproductive organs?

Hi, thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is the inflammation of upper genital tract including fallopian tubes and ovaries. The acidic nature of vaginal secretion and the downward ciliary movement in the cervical canal prevent the entry of infections in to uterus. this protection is lost during curettage done for evacuation in abortion and that is why you were prone for infection.

Most common cause of PID is sexually transmitted diseases (STD) by gonococcal and chlamydial organisms. These usually travel in a piggy back fashion along with sperms. The chances of STD in your boy friend should be ruled out as you have got the infection within 4 hours of intercourse.

Cervical and high vaginal swab culture, urethral swab culture, hemoglobin level, leucocyte count and ESR needs to be investigated for clinical diagnosis.

Antibiotics like Erythromycin, Cefoxitin or Tetracycline will prevent further spread of infection. To prevent the involvement of fallopian tubes it is important to start antibiotic therapy at the earliest. Analgesics like Ketoprofen or Ibuprofen will control the pain.

I hope this is useful to you.

General & Family Physician Dr. Achuo Ascensius's  Response
thanks for using health care magic.
Pelvic inflammatory disease is a disease in which there is
inflammation of structures in the pelvis most of which are
of the reproductive system ( tubes, uterus, ovaries etc)
and generally caused by infections. Such infections in a
very large extend are primarily through sexual intercourse.
PID can be acute or chronic with complications mostly in
the chronic stages. Such complications include infertility,
ectopic pregnancies, abscesses, pains during sexual
intercourse etc.
However, effective treatment reduces the risk of
complications. Treatment should target drugs that are
sensitive to common germs including Chlamydia and
Neisseria gonorrhoea.
Best regards and hope this helps you.
