Diagnosed with diastolic dysfunction

Hi I was recently diagnosed with diastolic dysfunction from ECG . I am female 48 years old with no history of high blood pressure, diabetes and no high cholesterol from recent full blood work panel. I am overweight 5 4 at 190 lbs and I do moderate activity daily. I take no RX meds, only herbal remedies for better health. I am very shocked by this diagnosis since I have no health issues and were never told the cause and what this leads too or even what to do. I do have a cardiac consult scheduled 2 months from now, but should this condition wait on treatment or some kind of intervention??

Control your weight, lifestyle modifications and u can do an ECHO and stress imaging if possible, common causes can be Hypertension, diabetes, valvular heart disease like aortic stenosis, pericarditis, cardiomyopathy etc
Beta blocker like bisoprolol, metoprolol etc and Ace-inhibitors like ramipril, lisinopril etc can be used but with regular cardiac check up :)

Doctor: I am a 52-year-old man whose significant medical history includes Crohn s disease and OSA (seemingly well-controlled with CPAP). Recently diagnosed on echocardiographic screening (due to brother with aortic aneurysm) with stage II diastolic dysfunction and mild to moderate LVH. Not previously diagnosed with hypertension. Posterior wall 1.39 and IVsD 1.53, as I recall. Left atrium mildly enlarged. I am 6 2 with current weight of about 228. Am trying to make sense of this as a layperson and also am awaiting results of cardiac MRI on Monday. Since this echo diagnosis 5 weeks ago, I have taken lisinopril 10 mg. and recently switched to losartan 50 mg. Other work-up since echo diagnosis has included: normal EKG; normal catecholamines; and normal BNP. Also, 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring reflected either well-controlled HTN lisinopril or no HTN at all. Very stressful dealing with this, your thoughts appreciated. MS, Nashville TN

Today I was diagnosed as having very mild diastolic dysfunction. I m 48 years old, obese, no high blood pressure, normally it run 118 to 124 over 68 to 82. Last Saturday it was a bit high (first time) at 138/92. I am not diabetic (just tested with a hemoglobin A1C). Recent CBC, Lipids were normal, thyroid is normal. I have used a lot of 800mg ibuprofen since 7/2010 because of pain with my siatic nerve, I ve been taking 2 to 3 of these a day everyday since then, but quit taking them 6 days ago. I m premenopausal and went to the cardiologist because of heart palpatations that would come for a couple weeks each month with my cycle since Jan of 2010. They would last for 10 to 12 hours then quit and come back the following day. They went away in July of 2010, and didn t return again until Feb., one day in March, and then nothing since then. I don t know how I developed this, although the ibuprofen has been mentioned as a possible cause. I m scared now. Can I live a long life with this condition? I m only 48, I d like to see 70 :) I should mention that I have a life long history of chronic broncitis too. Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Hello and good day to you! I had an echocardiogram done and was diagnosed in October, 2010 with mild left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. I was told not to worry about it. But I am worried because my heart is impaired! My cardiologist told me that it is reversible in me because I am slender, and have no other risk factors that contributed to this. He said I should just exercise more. He said my ventricle has stiffened from normal aging. I am 58 years old. Is he correct? I m afraid of this progressing to heart failure. Can it? If so, what steps should I take to stop the progression, and is exercise all that is needed? I feel like I am being patronized and it s very upsetting to me. I am a 58 year old female. I have SVT, Pac s, and Pvc s frequently for many years, along with chest pains quite often. But, I am told my heart is structurally sound. How can it be structurally sound when I have all these problems coming from my heart, along with the most recent diagnosis of LVDD? I would appreciate any response from you. Thankyou so very much for your time! Sincerely, Joan

My 14 yr old son has a low pulse rate. His resting is about 35- 42bpm. His left ventricle is enlarged and thick but on the high side of normal. His septum measures 12 mm. He is seeing a pediatric cardiologist. She is unsure of the cause.. We discovered his bradycardia when he became ill from bad stomach virus last June. He had a CT scan also in June that showed his liver and spleen were also enlarged but on the high side of normal. This was associated with the bad virus and the heart was treated as something separately. I now wonder if the enlarged liver, spleen and heart are connected? My son is not physically active enough to fit with "athlete's heart" diagnosis. I am taking him to pediatrician tomorrow and ask that he have his spleen and liver looked at again. I know that if they are...sympton of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. His cardiologist wants to see him again in 6 months. If everything is same or worse, she will restrict physical activity for 3 months and echo him again. Is there another test or something else I can do besides wait? Should I get a 2nd opinion?
