Diagnosed With Diabetes, Hypothyroid, Advised Gemer, Istamet. Are These Right Medication ?
i am 50 years and have been diagnosed with diabetes in may 2013. ( initial FASTING 182 , PP 338 HbA1C 10.5) Diabetologist started with Gemer 1 mg (1-0-1/2) .After 15 days of medication the blood test shows FF 108 , PP 124 , HbA1c 8.2 After 30 days of medication the doses were readjusted as Gemer 1MG (1/2 - 0 - 1/2) . A few days back I consulted the endocrinologist under whose treatment I am taking the medication for hypothyroidism (thyronorm 100 mg ) since 2006. He has advised to take ISTAMET (50/500) ( 1 - 0 - 1 ) dose .Kindly give your valuable advice which medicine to take and the side effect of both medicine. Regards AAAA E mail YYYY@YYYY
Hello, GEMER has GLIMMIPRIDE in it and belongs to sulfonylurea group of drugs having nausea and hypoglycaemia as its main side effects but is very rare. ISTAMET has SITAGLIPTIN and METFORMIN in it. Side effects of SITAGLIPTIN are nausea, cold like symptoms, hypoglycemia etc Similarly metformin can cause nausea, bloating, diarrhea etc. ISTAMET is a newer drug and causes less chance of hypoglycemia and less weight gain and so it being a a combination medicine is preferred by treating doctors.Longterm benefits of METFORMIN are also very good and so you may take ISTAMET instead of GEMER. However you should report to your doctor in case you develop any side effects as described above. Thanks
ISTAMET 50/500 IS THE NEWER DRUG WHICH IS THE COMBINATION OF GLIPTINS AND METFORMIN. IT HAS PROVED THE CARDIOVASCULAR SAFETY AND BETA CELL PRESERVATION EFFECTS. BUT GEMER 1 MG CONTAINS GLIMIPERIDE 1 MG WHICH IS INFACTO A SECRETOGOGUE WHOSE EFFECTS DO NOT LASTS LONGER, IT CAUSES BETA CELL EXHAUSTION AND FAILURE. SO FOR LONG TERM ISTAMET IS BETTER THAN GEMER.
THANKS
