Diagnosed With Compression Fracture On The Tibial Plateau. What Is The Treatment?

I have been diagnosed with a 3mm compression fracture in my tibial plateau. I had a skiing accident 8wks ago. My ROM is minimal and I am still in quite some pain. I was never told to stay off of my leg. The surgeon did not seem to concerned. Everything I read tells me to not put any weight on my leg for 6 to 8 weeks at least! I am obviously concerned about injuring my knee further. What is the normal procedure? i.e. cast, brace, crutches? Thanks! Greg

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The method of management of tibial plateau fractures depends on the its type (there are 6 types) but there is no mention about its type in description.

Generally, fractures with very minimal displacement can be treated by conservative management with either casts or braces and a non-weight bearing period for a minimum of 8-10 weeks depending upon the fracture pattern.

An exact "type" of the fracture is to be known to define the exact method of management.

Discuss with your treating doctor for any more issues.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
