Hi, Thanks for writing to us, Drugs in PDD are given only if absolutely necessary, if the hyperactivity and inattention is causing significant delay in the development. It is best to first start with non-pharmacological management and in case that shows no improvement then to give a trial of drugs. The first line of drug treatment is stimulants and next is atomoxetine (attentrol). Atomoxetine is helpful in reducing the hyperactivity which increases the attention span. Common side effects are pain abdomen, nausea, reduced appetite, slowdown in the rate of weight gain, sedation, daytime sleepiness, dizziness, vertigo, irritability, and mood swings. The child is usually seen to become very dull after this drug is given. I suggest you first try sensory integration programs and psychological treatment for poor attention span.
