Diagnosed As Spastic Colon After Severe Pain In Left Side With Constipation, Swelling, Excessive Renal Bleeding

Have problems with severe pain in my left side. It has caused problems my entire life. It usually starts with constipation. It can also start when I get a cold or virus. It always involves spasms in my left side. My left is noticeably swollen and very painful and usually I cannot function for several days. I have been hospitalized several time with excessive rectal bleeding. The problem comes on at any time and usually occurs about three times a year. I have taken Nexium which used to help but not anymore. Drs have diagnosed the problem as Colitius, Spastic Colon, IBS etc. Cannot tolerate Pizza coffee and most spicy foods which I try to avoid. However the problem still exists. I exercise daily. Used to have a high stress job but now retired. Can you help? Thank you Ken

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

First of all you should have colonoscopy done. Such symptoms are very characteristic for diverticulitis of sigmoid colon. Divericles are kind of pouches in the intestine wall. Usually diverticles are caused by chronic constipation. If such diverticle gets inflamed there is a risk of perforation. That is why such part of intestine should be removed with surgery.
If there was colonoscopy done and no divericles were present, only spastic colon, still there might be a need to remove affected part.

Please try RIfaximine and Mebeverine treatment and if it wont help, consult a surgeon and consider surgery.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
