Cylindrical Eye Problem, Glasses Suggested For Child. Explain?

Hi Dr..I took my 5 year son to Dr yesterday .. n he said that my son is having cylinderical eye problem .. he suggested eye glasses for him... The numbers he diagnose is

I just want to know what kind of problem is it? mild or severe? N why it happens? How can it be gone? Which kind of weak eyesight is it far or near? R glasses must for such kids who have this problem? Do the use of glasses or time can make it go forever?

-2.00D of cylinder is severe. If you do not give him glasses right now, the vision may not improve with glasses when he grows up. Glasses are a must. It might change in future or may stay constant or may improve according to his eyeball growth.
It's a far sight disorder.
It occurs due curvature of the eye. In his case the vertical curvature is steeper than the horizontal.
Please encourage him to wear glasses.
