Crackling noise while bending knees, below knee cap, pain when doing exercises and yoga

Hello. My knees have a very loud crackling noise when I bend them . If I hold around my knee cap I can actually feel something like sand crunching around and under the patella . Especially below the knee cap. It is getting louder. Theres only some pain when doing exercises that tax the knee or if I put my weight on them during yoga for instance. What is it?

General & Family Physician Dr. Smrithi's  Response
Hello welcome to HCM
How old are you?
Has this been happening recently? Is there pain only on particular posture or all the time? Have you been regular in doing yoga? Crackling sound can be perfectly normal in most of the cases.. So if it is the sound you dont have much to worry. As for the pain you can apply local application of diclofenac. And even after that if it still persists then you can go for some investigations.
Hope this answers your query
