Could Weight Gain Be Due To Thyroid Disorder?

Hello Dr Rynne I quit smoking (1 1/2 packs a day/after 35 years) May 2014 I did fairly well the first 4 months no extra eating etc and have continued to keep my regular food intake. However from June on I developed this pain in my right side just across from the belly button but it tends to radiate behind or deep inside. I went for scopes bowel and stomach. Also a CAT scan. Nothing found except it was confirmed I do have h pylori and a hernia so no treatment was recommended. I am scheduled a few months down the road for a mirror imaging scan. I began the process of menopause at 39 and I am 56 now. I still have the night sweats especially about the throat and once I quit smoking have had this clearing constantly in my throat. My doctor blames it on asthma but my symbicort makes no difference. I have been gaining weight steadily even though I began walking an hour everyday the exercise made no difference. Could this be thyroid related? I am concerned and think cancer given the swelling of my stomach, no bigger anywhere else. I had my gallbladder out at 18 years of age, my tubs are tied and have been since I was 29. Please give me some direction. My doctors are like lacking in concern. Darlene Millett

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear, thanks for asking question

You are true , weight gain could be due to thyroid disorders specially when it is under performing(hypothyroidism). Other associated symptoms like exessive sweating, early menopause which you have are also suggesting hypothyroidism. However few symptoms are due to astma like urge to clear throat repeatedly.

I would advise you to consult your doctor again and explain him/her in detail about your symptoms and do complete thyroid profile along with other investigations. Meanwhile continue physical exercise along with low calorie diet (vegetables, fruits, coarse cereals, more water intake).
I wish you a healthy living.
