Could The Ulcer Turn Into Cancer With A History Diabetes?
Hi my name is Dinesh. I am 52 years old and I have diabetes with a history of Heart disease (heart attack) as well. Recently I have been diagnosed with Peptic Ulcer. Now I know that it take a lot of time for a wound to heal for Diabetic patients. Now my question is since my ulcer is an internal wound, should I be concerned about it not healing. Sometimes I heard that the ulcer can turn into cancer. Is that a possibility? How often should I see a doctor regarding this? Which specialist should I see? I will appreciate any suggestions.
Dear Dinesh, Welcome to HCM, I understand your concern. Peptic ulcer is definitely a different entity. It is not same as your Superficial ulcers. Of course good sugar control is needed. Some points for better recovery from peptic ulcers 1. Avoid spicy foods 2.Stop smoking 3.Reduce alcohol 4.Reduce Stress 5.Take food on time (Do not skip meals or delay meals)
Now coming to your fear on cancer not every peptic ulcer becomes a cancer. There is a very small percentage of peptic ulcers that do so. IF your symptoms are relieved and you follow what i have said above you will not need a very regular followup. Some cases do require H.Pylori treatment. You can follow up with medical gastroenterologist till your ulcer heals.. Hope my answer helped you Dr.Riyaz Sheriff
