My 57 year old sister just called saying she had melanoma on her leg...She is prone to exaggerate to get special attention. I asked how she knew and she said that she had a red spot on her leg that hurt...just wondering how a Dx is made for melanoma...

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello,

A melanoma is usually dark-colored or pigmented rather than being red in color. Most likely she has a furuncle which is a skin infection, especially if it is of recent onset. I suggest her to use an OTC topical antibiotic e.g Neosporin ointment, twice daily.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
