Could The Short Menstrual Cycle Be Due To A Pituitary Tumor?

Hi I m 41 and have 3 children. With all of my children I got pregnant without any difficulty at all. I have remarried and have been trying to have a baby with my new husband for 6 months. In that time I have had 2 chemical pregnancies and a miscarriage. I recently had a blood test that showed my prolactin was 156. I had a very short cycle when I first started my periods in my early teens, this was regulated when I went on the contraceptive pill. When I came off the pill my cycle remained at 28 days for a number of years. Over the past few years my cycle has shortened again to about 22 -24 days. My 15 year old daughter also has a short cycle. Could this be due to a pituitary tumour? Is it hereditary? What are the chances of my fertility problems being resolved so I can have a healthy baby? Many thanks

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your health concern with us. After going through your query I have noticed certain facts. 1. You did not have any difficulty conceiving in the past marriage. The reason for the inability to sustain a pregnancy in this marriage can involve both the partners. This needs to be evaluated. 2. Your advancing age, as compared when you had children, could mean some possible hormone imbalances. The abnormal prolactin level needs further evaluation like an MRI/CT to exclude tumors of the pituitary. Other hormone assays are also needed. The antral follicular count is another essential monitor. 3. If an analysis was done of the aborted material in the recent pregnancies, it is possible to detect the cause. 4. It can be a hereditary factor that your daughter also has a short cycle; however, evaluation is necessary. 4. You still have a fair chance to sustain a pregnancy provided your hormone imbalances are corrected, any infections in the couple controlled and prenatal care taken. Hope this helps.
