Could Swelling, Pain And Discolored Bruise On Cheek Post Tooth Extraction Be Hematoma?

I had 6 teeth extracted on Wednesday. The eye tooth was very difficult to pull. Hours after surgery I swelled & started to bruise. Severe pain on right side. The bruise has steadily moved down my cheek & is dark purple. Could this be a hematoma? Do I seek medical attention?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONCERN.

Thanks for your query .The symptoms you mention in your query are very common after tooth extraction,so don't panic. During tooth exaction sometimes pricing of blood vessel or muscle occur due to which hematoma is formed ,bruising is also due to leakage of blood to superficial skin (as in your case).Swelling can also occur due to traumatic injury during extraction ,which is again a normal thing.

I would suggest you to give ice pack to affected area for 15-20 mins thrice a day ,But do not apply ice directly to area. take painkiller and anti inflammatory like ibuprofen or medicine prescribed by dentist . After 4th day start giving hot compresses to that area . It will take 7-10 days to get it completely normal.

If swelling doesn't start decreasing after 3-4 days then it may be indication of infection then you should consult dentist again for proper examination . Dentist may prescribe you further antibiotic course.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
Get well Soon.
Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
