Could Swelling And Itching In Vagina Be Due To Metronidazole?

Hi, I am a 34 year old female taking the antibiotics metronidazole and sulfimeth/trimethoprim. My vagina has gotten swollen, painful and itchy. I have been applying cortizone and am trying not to touch it, but I m scared I might ve torn my clitoris glans. Is that possible?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Got the history of : Female/ 34 years -taking Metro and Sulpha - vagina got swollen, painful and itchy - cortizone locally - worried if the clitoris has got torn.

With an elucidate history you have provided, my thoughts are::
-There may be reaction to sulpha as you have got swelling, itching and pain in the vagina.
-Another possibility you have thought of tearing of clitoris glans., meaning either you had a rough sex or rough handling of the clitoris.
-Any associated problems like diabetes or STD that you or your partner has ? This has to be ruled out by the blood, urine tests.

I would advise you the following:
Stop Sulpha and trimethoprim and change over to another antibiotic like Ofloxacin or Cefixime /
-Stop Metronidazole and start on Tinidazole.
-Take an anti-inflammatory medicine like Ibuprofen in full dosage as per the weight you have.
-Apply liquid Povidone Iodine liberally 4 times a day to the affected area and skin around it.

-Consult a Gynecologist for actual visualization of the disease you have.
Once a proper diagnosis has been made, treatment is easy to be charted and curative and to be taken by you and your sex partner.
I find this answer helpful
