Could Sudden Feeling Of Breathlessness Indicate Pulmonary Edema?

My husband sometimes wakes at night unable to breathe and gasping for air. He says it is like drowning and feels he is often close to collapse. He is awaiting assessment for sleep apnea but I am concerned it could also be something like pulmonary edema, they have similar symptoms. Is damage being done while we wait for assessment?

Hi welcome to him
I understand your query and concern.
Your symptoms could be related pulmonary edema Leading to Right heart failure. Also get an ECG,2D Echo, chest x ray, complete blood picture, urine culture for confirming the diagnosis.I also advise you to start taking antibiotic course, nebulization, sodabicarb, calcium gluconate, diuretics, nitrates depending on the patient condition. Also monitor hypertension and heart rate.Get an Arterial blood gas analysis for knowing his respiratory counts.Serum electrolytes and blood sugars are to be measured.Consult your emergency physician and cardiologist for expert management.
