Could Severe Hair Loss With Red Rashes On Head Wrongly Diagnosed As Male Pattern Hair Loss?

Hello, I will turn 18 this June and am currently suffering hair loss. I am a male, and have gone to the dermatologist who has diagnosed me with male pattern hair loss. I am highly suspicious of such a diagnosis since I have always had thick hair till 16, when I suffered from what I thought to be dandruff. There were red rashes on my head which I would scratch and remove, unknowing of the possible implications. A year later, I have loss most of my hair, and it is severely thinned now. The hair around my crown has thinned as well, which has led the dermatologist to diagnose it as male pattern hair loss. However, I ve always thought that it was seberroric dermatitis which the dermatologist feels is only mild. Is there a chance that this is a misdiagnosis since none of my family members suffer from male pattern hair loss?

Hi,

There is a lot of possibility of having both diseases to occur at a time... Male pattern baldness and seborrheic dermatitis. Your dermatologist may treat first seborrheic dermatitis and after the control of SD , he would give treatment for male pattern baldness.

Hope this helps.
