Could Painful Knee After Fall Indicate Sprained Knee?

Hi, my name is Rose. My age 49 yrs. Last night I was at home and I started to walk side ways ( something stupid and regret I walked side-ways). As I started to walk side-ways I tripped and fell face down ( all I hurt was both my knees). But when I fell I noticed my lateral side of my knees bent side-ways. It hurt and I immediately straightened my knees. I was on floor and asked for ice to be put on both knees. It took 20 minutes before I got my self very carefully of the floor. I then elevated my legs and applied ice. I can walk but with pain and very carefully, also climbed stairs. I think I just sprained my knees. What do you think. Please answer 440-846-3920, thanks. How do I know that its not that serious and need surgery?

hi Rose,
Thanks for posting your query in Health Care Magic, i understand your concern.
By your history i think that you might have mild knee sprain but to be on the safer side i suggest you to get a X-ray done of the knee that you have hurt.
Consult an othopedician who will be able to advice you better after looking up at your X-ray.
If its just a sprain, applying ice to the area, compressing it with bandages , and giving complete rest to your legs should bring down the symptoms.
A ligament tear or fracture of any of the bones involved need to be assessed by an othopedic surgeon.
Hope this helps.
