Could Mercury Exposure Lead To Autism?

My child had been exposed to a spilled mercury substance when he was 1yr old. Although during that event there was no sign of health problem as could be the result of mercury poisoning whatsoever. He is three now and he was diagnosed with autism. Could this austim be caused by the mercury exposure.

Single exposure of mercury has acute symptoms. For side effects to occur 2 years after the first exposure their needs to be continuous exposure resulting in chronic mercury poisoning. It seems unlikely to be associated with the mercury exposure 2 years back.
