Could Large, Swollen Bruise On Cheek With Hard Lump Post Injury Be Fracture?

Hi, my son (7) banged his cheek a few weeks ago colliding with a child at school. He had a large bruise over his cheekbone, swelling and developed a black eye. The brusing and swelling has all gone but I ve noticed a hard lump over his cheekbone. You can t see it but can feel a very hard, almost sharp lump. It doesn t feel like a haematoma, it feel as hard as bone. Could he have fractured his cheekbone? I can press it without it causing him too much pain.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain it seems more like a soft tissue injury and a hard lump can be a Hematoma as many a times the hematoma gets localized and encapsulated with inflammatory cells, tissue fibres and broken blood vessels accumulating in the area of injury and there is formation of a hard lump..
The chances of fracture of cheek bone seems less probable as it would appear as a dent or discontinuation along the jaw bone and not as a lump..
But to be on a safer side consult a Paediatric dentist or an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and he can do a clinical evaluation along with x ray to rule out for fracture and if there is a fracture reduction and fixation will have to be done surgically..
In case if there is no fracture doing alternate warm and cool compresses and applying Heparin gel for faster disintegration of hematoma will help..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
