Could Itching In Anus Be Side Effect Of Taking Clarithromycin?

I have started to take Clarithromycin about a week ago for Rosacea (sp?) . As soon as I started this medication my anus became very itchy. Is there any connection . To minimize my discomfort I have stopped taking any alcohol, coffee or spicy foods.

Hello,

If you are allergic to Clarithromycin, itching anywhere including the anus can occur. The other common causes are fungal infections which are not uncommon in people on people on antibiotics. The other possibility is whip worm infection. Itching in the night only is more common with whip-worm infection.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Noble Zachariah, Internal Medicine Specialist
