Could Constant Dizziness, Headaches And Throbbing Sensation After Head Injury Mean Slow Brain Bleed?

I hit my head a little over a week ago, top back (left) it was about 2 days later I noticed the lump and had a massive headache for the last 5 days now. today I am beginning to get nervous bc my headache is bad and I feel dizzy too. It could be anxiety, bc I suffer from that as well, but the lump is literally throbbing. I don t have insurance for another two weeks (our company changed carriers) so I dont want to go and pay out of pocket for something that is just a normal healing process. The thing that makes me most nervous is the constant throbbing at the site of the injury, and of course I am reading online of brain bleeds that are slow, and even though its over a week, thats what could be happening to me. Any advice? KJ, NY

Hi KJ.
I hope you're feeling a bit better by now. Lemme see if i can help you out a bit here with the basics.

Most bumps and bruises on the scalp are just that.. bumps and bruises, fractures and bleeds are rarer because the skull is a pretty tough structure. takes a lot of punishment.

Since I can't examine you directly I'm going to have to make a few assumptions. You can always get back to me and correct me if I've made an incorrect one.

I'm going to assume that your vision is still normal. you haven't had any changes since the injury. If you have.. That's something that needs to be addressed face to face with your Physician or ER doctor.

I'm going to assume that for the last week, you've been managing to keep a fairly normal schedule and day to day activity. In other words... you're not oversleeping or feeling excessively tired all the time.

Lastly.. I'm going for a two'fer but I'm going to assume that your hearing hasn't changed since the injury and you haven't had any seizures either.

If all of the above sounds about right.. then I'm betting that you've probably irritated some of the tissues that surround the brain (called the Meninges). When those guys get stretched or bruised they can cause a lot in the way of headaches and dizziness.

Generally head trauma that requires inpatient care normally makes itself VERY apparent well within 24-48 hours. Now you are right. Slow bleeds CAN happen, but they are rare and happen in pretty rare circumstances.

How bout we try it like this. Lets try and use some light over the counter pain medications first (you've probably been downing them for those headaches for the last week, I would).

If you're pain isn't getting any better over the weekend, or your vision changes, you start hearing a lot of ringing in you're head or you just feel like this is just getting too lousy.. then head to the nearest doctor.

Otherwise I'd just check in with you're family doc at you're next checkup and fill them in.

Hope this helps!

Vin
