Could Bleeding In Gums Be Due To Aspirin?

Hi i am female 52 yrs of age and have just suffered a heart attack 3 weeks ago amongst bp tablets Aspirin and cholesterol meds i have also been put on 75mg of plavix. I have noticed that my gums are bleeding when i brush my teeth which never happened before. Could this have something to do with the medication? I am also feeling very lethargic, i am taking it easy so don't see any reason why i should feel tired. The bleeding in my gums is the thing that i really am questioning? I would appreciate if you could answer this for me. Forgot to mention i am a non smoker, but have a family history of very high cholesterol. Thanking you in advance Teresa

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain aspirin is given in patients with certain cardiac diseases as it is acts as a blood thinning agent and reduces the risk of strokes, heart attacks and is also given to patients who are at a risk to develop blood clots to prevent clot formation.

It have a blood thinner and also has an anti-platelet activity which prevent clotting of blood and thus excessive bleeding.

In case of your gums the episodes of bleeding can be due to aspirin.

I would suggest you to consult your cardiologist and explain the symptoms so that he can reduce the dose of aspirin if possible.

Other thing that you can do is maintain a good oral hygiene and use an ultra soft tooth brush to avoid gum injury by toothbrush that can initiate bleeding.

Hope your query is solved..
