Could Black Stools Be Related To Internal Bleeding?

My husband, aged 62 has had black stools the past 2 weeks....he takes a baby aspirin everyday and he is on 20 mg of Benicar one dose daily. He had some lab work and was told his hemoglobin count is 9.6. His md thinks he has internal bleeding and wants to admit him to the hospital. What do you think?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history about your husband having black stools and understood your concerns.
Black stools for the past 2 weeks can be due to the various reasons:
Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract is the most common and most dangerous too.
Baby Aspirin can cause severe gastritis and hence the GI bleeding.
Hemoglobin has already come down, this is another worry.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Yes, get him admitted as emergency can strike anytime.
Need the tests of stool for three consecutive days after stopping anything that has more iron like green leafy vegetables and meat and chicken.
Repeat tests of blood for CBC, BT, CT, Prothrobin time, Liver and kidney functions.
Upper GI Endoscopy and colonoscopy must be done.
Contrast enhanced CT scan of the whole abdomen.
All these things will give the correct diagnosis and a plan for management.
He may blood a blood transfusion.
