Coughed Hard. Felt Tear In The Bottom Of Ribs. Having Difficulty In Breathing When Sneezing/coughing. Reason?

recently I was driinking water and felt like when I swallowed the water went down the wrong pipe which made me cough . Well I coughed real hard and felt a slight tear under the bottom of my left ribs. This happened about 2 weeks ago so I cut out all my physical activity and began to use Ice on my ribs/just below them and heat and took ibprofen for the pain. Since then I have notice that sometimes if I sneeze or cough it becomes difficult to breath/catch my breath. I am wondering if I might have punctured a lung or something when I hurt myself

Hello,

Accidental leakage of liquids from throat into the wind pipe is not uncommon. The severe bout of cough could have produced (a) Strain or sprain of some ligaments (the cord-like structures at the end of muscles) (b) Muscular strain or rupture of a few fibers. Though reported in literature, fracture of rib sue to cough is rather uncommon.

It is unlikely that a punctured lung (with air in side the pleural cavity around the lung) will allow 2 weeks to pass.
Simple analgesics with local heat application or simple pain balms might help.

The pain may take a week or two more to reduce. If you are very worried about your lung, please get yourself evaluated by a physician or pulmonologist. He will carry out the necessary investigations and come to an exact, complete diagnosis.
