Cough, pale yellow phlegm, smoker, emphysema, pneumonia, bronchitis, back and ribs sore

constant cough for nearly 2 months - wakes me up during sleep - pale yellow phlegm with little brown specks in it - I am a smoker - It s probably the beginning stages of emphyzema but I m wondering if it could be something in addition to this. I have a doctor appt next week as I am very concerned and obviously want to and NEED to quit smoking . I ve had pneumonia many times and bronchitis , but this cough is persistent, in fact, my back, ribs are sore and I have a stiff neck.

Hi there. Thank you for posting your question with Healthcaremagic. I will do my best to help you.

You urgently need a chest X-ray as a minimum. Try to have this done ahead of your doctor's visit as this will save time. Depending on the out come of this x-ray you may also need to have a bronchoscopy. The important thing here is to rule out lung cancer and to make a definitive diagnosis. Good luck.

I hope that I have answered your questions fully and been of some help. If you have anymore questions please contact me again anytime.

Dr Andrew Rynne.
