Consistent High Body Temperature In 1 Year Old Child For Last 8 Days

Hello Doctor, my neighbor s child aged 1 year is having fever (around 100-101 degree Fahrenheit) for the last 8 days. He is otherwise active. He is a skinny baby (with low baby fat since birth ). Blood test showed low Hemoglobin count. He was even treated for Malaria (as it is rainy season here in India now therefore more mosquito related diseases). Even after completing the course of medicine for malaria, his body temperature is still higher than normal, mostly during night time). What may be the reason for consistently high body temperature? Could it be Typhoid or could it be due to low hemoglobin count? Kindly help me with with your advice.

Hi Dharmaprakash,

Welcome to HCM.
Fever could be due to lot of causes and needs through investigation to find out the cause. If all tests prove negative then we call it as pyrexia of unknown origin. In this case withdrawing all kinds of medicine and controlling the temperature by wiping the body with cloth soaked in room temperature water is the best remedy.
Evening rise of temperature may be seen in tuberculosis. Thyroid function tests may be required to rule out raised body metabolic rate.

Hi Dharmaprakash
Welcome to HealthcareMagic.
It could be possible. Were any malaria tests done ? Because , the diagnosis of malaria can be confirmed with blood test.If the kid has fever even after treatment for malaria , other causes like typhoid should be evaluated.

Widal test could prove Typhoid. If you can provide other details like complete blood picture , it is possible to give better advice.
You can provide these details as comment to this reply or feel free to mail me.
Take care

wellcome to health care magic,
Surprised to hear the treatment of malaria as in this age group Malaria is very very RARE and without test its unethical to give antimalarial drugs.Common cause in this age is urinary infections.
Thanks.
