Hello,A friend of mines daughter is 7 years old and has a chronic constipation problem, doctors have treated her with laxatives for weeks but they have all been temporary, they give her a high fiber diet with lots of fruits and vegis but this too after a while becomes of no effect. She passes stools on a daily basis but the quantity is very little compared to the intake and the stools are alos very dry and sometimes only a few small lumps .She was also diagnosed in having a scared kidney ,could this have any bearings on this issue. She feels no discomfort or no pains when passing tools though.Pls advice.Thanking you.MGA

hi the two conditions are not related as per my knowledge. however, i would advice for a thyroid profile to be done just to rule out hypothyroidism as a cause of chronic constipation although it's not the only symptom. usage of laxatives for such long period in children is not advisable as it can lead to other complication. please begin by increasing the fluid intake and adding cereal and lots of veggies as in sandwiches in her diet. and constipation is defined as passage of stools less than thrice in a week. her hard stools could be due to less water intake.

hi this is not the case of kidney problem.it is due to tight anus.in some kids it is from birth .in childhood due to dfferent diet it is not so prominent but as the solid food starts child develop the costipation. STOOL ARE DRY and are few small lumps because due to small intake of fluids it is dry and a portion of faecal matter passed out and remaining is left in lower colon, this increase the costipation and passed out in next defecation TREATMENT 1. lie ur daughter on her sidewith legs bend over the tummy, now wear glove over index finger and aply pure glycerine then slightly press her anuswith pulp of your finger.when her anal opening is slightly loose push it inside the anus keep it there for 3 minutes and take out.this is dilatation of anus.repeat it daily twise 2---give her lot of water and juice3.---2table spoon of ispaghol with cold milkand sugar.ok bye
