Child With Pain In The Spine After A Fall. Pain While Breathing. Need To Get Checked?

my 10 yr old daughter was at a camp today @noon, feel off an obstacle course flat on her back, got the wind knocked out of her. Came home later and said fine, went to dance class and came home and was really cranky and said spine hurt, then started to hyperventilate from pain of breathing in her chest and upper back. Gave children's motrin and she slept, but keeps waking saying hurts so much to breathe. She can take a deep breathe, but hurts so much.

Hi,

Since the child had a fall and hurt her back but was able to perform her daily activity later it is likely that it must have been a blunt injury to her back.

If at present she has difficulty in breathing due to pain inspite of giving her motrin it would be advisable that you get her examined by her doctor so that a Radiological test (X Ray spine and chest ) could be done to rule out fracture of ribs.

Pediatrician Dr. Taher Y Kagalwala's  Response
Dear user,

At best, she has sprained her trunk muscles, but the most likely thing that has happened is that while she may have sprained her back, she has most likely fractured a couple of ribs. There is a mostly empty sac just inside the ribs that covers the whole lung, and if this has torn, air or blood may rush into the sac and make breathing really difficult.

Hence, my sincere advice is to take her to ER urgently for an assessment, and then take it from there.
