Child With Celiac, Heart Flutters. Why Might She Be Experiencing This?

my daughter is 16..other than being celiac , she has always been very healthy. Lately she is complaining of heart flutters. She is not anxious nor is she a kid who over reacts....she does not take caffeine or energy drinks. She plays sports..soccer 3 times per weeks and eats healthy... Why might she be experiencing this?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi there, thanks for asking. Some people who have celiac experience loss of potassium from their bowel because of loose stool. Low potassium level is one of the factors for the heart flutter. You can ask her to see if her diet is specific for celiac to avoid diarrhea. You can also look at the sodium and potassium in the tests to see if they are normal. Celaic is a serious condition and she should have a good and proper diet to avoid any problem and have a good growth. She should also be observed periodically for other autoimmune problems like thyroid issue, etc to have a good health. I wish the best for her.

Psychiatrist Dr. Seikhoo Bishnoi's  Response
Hello faye.reglin
Welcome to HCM

Occasional flutter in heart or palpitations may be a sign of underlying anxiety. She is a young girl and at this age a lot of anxiety symptoms may manifest. Occasional flutter may be due to Panic Disorder, as in panic palpitations with severe restlessness, tremors, sense of impending doom, fear, shakiness are seen. While it may be a part of Non Specific Anxiety, in which same features are seen. Rarely it may be due to Anaemia, as palpitations and anxiety are main symptoms.
So please pay a visit to a good psychiatrist and take expert opinion.
Thanks
Good luck
