He now having very loose stools and reduced appetite and also had daytime naps yesterday and today which he never does. We haven't noticed the coin being passed. Should I be concerned? Being a Pediaric Surgeon, i have seen innumerable cases of coin ingestion. If they have passed beyong Oesophagus , they will definitely pass through the anus, just a matter of time. I have seen around 800 cases of coin ingestion and none have required any operative intervention. They have passed out spontaneously. In majority of cases in 2 days and in few cases after 20 days too. I have just kept them on close follow up.
No cause of concern in case of your cute kid, it will definitely pass out. The symptoms he is experiencing are unrelated to coin ingestion. They are just co-incidental symptoms experienced by him. There is no cause of concern if
1. There is no vomiting
2. No distension of abdomen
3. He is passing stools
I would suggest you symptomatic treatment of loose stools by giving him Oral Rehydration solution to maintain hydration. Also giving 2 banana a day will help in early expulsion of coin. It has definitely helped many of my patients.
In case you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.
