Child Suffering From Loose Motion. Medication Not Working. Very Tired. How To Stop Diarrhea?

My 1 yr 7 months old boy is suffering from continuous loose stool for the past 2 days and medications did not work. The stool is very loose and he keeps passing the motion every 20 mins to 1 hr (almost 20 to 25 times a day). Gets very tired and not eating properly. No vomiting or fever. Please suggest medication and proper diet to arrest the diarrhea as fast as possible.

Hello.
Thanks for the query.
From your note, it looks like your child might be going in for dehydration as he is passing 20 - 25 watery stools without improvement for 2 days and insufficient oral intake.
More than medication, what your child now needs is proper fluid restoration. He may have to be admitted and given iv fluids or you will have to give oral re-hydration fluids, sachets of which are available in any pharmacy.
Most diarrheas may be viral and will improve with time, but dehydration is the worse enemy. So, for the speedy recovery of your small son, I suggest you go back to the hospital and consider admitting him for a couple of days till he gets better or atleast see your doctor again.
Meanwhile refrain from giving milk and milk products. You can give any other bland diet with a bit of salt and some sugar added.
Hope your son recovers soon.
Bye

hello there,
first i must make it clear that there is no medication available for children that can stop a diarrhoeal episode instantly. and whatever is available is not recommended to be used in children as they have very serious side effects like intestinal obstruction that may prove fatal to your child.

at this age most of the diarrhea episodes are viral in origin mostly rotavirus specially if stool is not associated with blood or mucous and it does not require any specific treatment other than maintaining adequate hydration.

generally it subsides within a week without any problem if the hydration is maintained well.

some other medicines that is of help is Zinc suspension and may be probiotics.
in diet you can give semisolid preparations of whole grain cereals and pulses, banana, whoile grain bread, avoid processed food or junk food, avoid plain glucose water, etc.

danger signs that you should watch for would be, excessive lethargy or irritability, refusal to feed, intractable vomiting, not passing urine for long etc, in which case you should get an urgent advice.

soo please be patient and wait for diarrhea to subside on its own.
wish speedy recovery of your son
regards
Dr. Amit Kumar
