Child Sees Spots, Has Eye Pain, Painful Lump Behind Ear. Serious?

My 8-year-old daughter s eyesight has been worsening over the past 2 years at an alarming rate, she just told us she sees lots of spots, colors, shapes, etc. (she thought everyone did), has occasional eye pain, and just found a painful lump behind her left ear (no injury). She saw an ophthalmologist last week who didn t find anything. He seemed nonchalant about it, but said we could take her to another specialist if we wished. Could all of these issues be indicative of anything serious?

Hi

Seeing spots on and off is not a problem.
But if persistent , it needs to be addressed. Since you say there is worsening of eye sight too, I would suggest you to undergo a detailed evaluation- that includes assessment of refractory errors, intra ocular pressure and an ophthalmoscopy.

If all these things were done and normal- then you need not worry.

Does she get headache too? Migraine may present with visual auras and usually runs in families.

The lump behind her ears might be a lymph node which can get enlarged due to infections/ infestations in the scalp, external ear etc.

Hope my answer helps you.
Wish your daughter good health.
