My baby who is 10 months fell 3/4 days ago and hit her head on the side of the table. She cried a little I distracted her and she seemed fine. Tonight after washing her hair I felt a large soft lump to the right side, front of her head . I have read that soft bumps are dangerous do I need yo take her to the hospital ? Regards Shadi

Hello there,

For a head injury it is important to observe the child for any warning signs that may indicate something serious like :

1. Vomiting
2. Drowsiness
3. Convulsions or fits
4. Abdominal distention
5. Palor or the child looks pale

Also if you notice any depression or a flat area when you run your hand over the scalp, it may indicate an underlying fracture.

The soft hump may indicate a collection of blood.

You can rule out any internal injury by getting a CT scan of the head.

Wishing your child a speedy recovery.

Take care.

Dentist Dr. Neha Gupta's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

The scalp have an abundant blood supply and injury to these areas often results in bleeding under the skin. When the bleeding is restricted to one area, it causes bruising and swelling.

It sounds like just a soft tissue bruise and not a more serious, sub-dermal hematoma. The good signs are him acting normal and not showing any sensitivity with it...however you can check for a concussion by shining a flashlight in his eyes and watching the dilation response of his pupils...the response should be quick and the pupil should get small in the light and open when you pull the light away. If there is not normal pupil repsonse that is a sure sign of a concussion. Good thing to take him to the doctor to check it out...

Also seek emergency attention if your child exhibits the following signs or symptoms following a head injury:

Persistent or worsening headache
Imbalance
Vomiting
Memory loss
Mood changes

Hope I have answered your query.

Wishing you good health.
Regards.
