Child Have Problem In Concentrating, Problem In Speech And Ear. Can It Be A Mild Ear Infection?

Hi
I have a 5 yo son who is struggling at school. His teacher said he is extremely clumsy, falls down a lot, (can not ride a bike yet)has difficulty concentrating on tasks and following instructions. He has regressed with speech too, (his speech was very clear until about 3.5 years and now it is very hard for others to understand him). He has one ear that is always full of wax. Could he have a middle ear infection?

Hi,

Usually a middle ear infection i.e Otitis Media is associated with pus discharge .Wax accumulation would in rare situation lead to ear infection.

However there are few behavioural issues along with speech problem which is of concern.Wax leads to conductive deafness and hence it would be advisable to get his wax removed and then perform Auditory function test to rule out any other form of deafness. Also he might need a thorough neurological examination to know why he is clumsy.

I would advise you to fix up an appointment with his Paediatrician and ENT specialist for further evaluation
Bye.
Take Care.
