My daughter is 13 months old and has had ongoing ear infections since she was 71/2 months old she gets sick and then develops and ear infection (treated with antibiotics ). I had an appointment to see a specialist who said she should get grommets. What questions should I be asking the specialist before going ahead with surgery how can I check the ENT s experience etc

hello, to assess the credentials of any doctor you should consult the patients he or she has treated or you can ask your doctor to refer you to any of his old patients to allay your anxiety about this operation. generally grommet insertion is a relatively easier and safe procedure under experienced hands and with very little or no complications. but before submitting your child to this procedure you must ask for any precautions you need to take before and after surgery, especially regarding some medicines that your child might be taking, what complications or problems your child may develop in immediate post operative period or later and how to tackle them. i would also like you not to hide intentionally or unintentionally any medical history or about any medicine your child is taking before the procedure. this would be helpful for the anesthesist as this procedure is done under general anesthesia. generally this procedure is successful in about 70 - 80 percent of cases. thanks
