Child Has Nearsightedness. Giving Carrots, Spinach And Fruits. Is This Genetic?

Hello there,

I have a 9 yr old who is near shighted and has a recent prescription of -4. My hubby and I have high power as well and are very worried our child eyesight will suffer more. My child is good at eating, studies and activities. Eye sight has not been a hindrance so far. I had been very particular about the child's eyesight and had been feeding lots of carrots, spinach, fruits, dairy etc. from her birth. Wearing glasses does not bother my kid and she has been well trained at being happy with her glasses and the way she looks, does not care what others say.

My question is: Is eyesight condition genetic? If yes, are there chance my 2nd kid could turn up same as well. I know there is not much I can do to prevent or restrict it from happening.

Thank you so much.

Hello,
Eye sight or refractive error is known to be familial and usually high refractive error called as pathological myopia has got strong genetic influences.

As you have mentioned in your history both you and your husband are having high refractive error probably pathological myopia, hence the probability that your 2nd kid getting the problem is there.

As you know there is no way to prevent it from happening, but I advice you to get regular examination of the eye of your son to detect the refractive error early and treatment for the same to prevent complications.
Thank you

Hi..
Thanks for choosing HCM...
Refractive errors especially myopia( nearsightedness) is genetically determined..
If the parents are myopic there are high chances of their kids also getting the same. but not mandatory..
Because it is genetically determined there is little you can do to prevent its development..
But you can give the same diet as you are already giving to prevent more increase in the power..
Get their eyes checked up at regular intervals..
I hope this information is helpful..Take care..
