Child Has Fever, Shivering, Cold Hands, Feet, Not Eating. Prescribed Antibiotics For Tonsillitis. What To Do?

Hello Doctor, my son is 18 months old and has a temperature of 39.5 degrees for the past 2 days, shivering, cold hands & feet & is not eating. The Doctor saw him on Monday and prescribed antibiotics as he has tonsillitis. He is still not well with the above symptoms??? No rashes.
What must I do? How long does a fever normally last?
Thank you

Welcome to HealthCare Magic
Hope you are doing good. Fever , Shivering , cold hands , feet and loss of appetite sometimes nausea , vomiting Throat pain or tenderness ,Redness of the tonsils , A white or yellow coating on the tonsils , Painful blisters or ulcers on the throat ,Hoarseness or loss of voice are all symptoms of Tonsillitis .
Treatment for tonsillitis will depend in part on the cause. To determine the cause, perform a rapid strep test or throat swab culture. If tests reveal bacteria, treatment will consist of antibiotics to cure the infection. Antibiotics may be given for 10 days by mouth. Although symptoms will likely improve within two or three days after starting the antibiotic. Antibiotics will take awhile to cover the infection as soon the infection is settled the fever will drop to normal.

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

Please monitor for danger signs. The danger signs are
1. Poor feeding and repeated vomiting.
2. Lethargy.
3. Loss of consciousness.
4. Fits or seizures.

Since he has poor feeding I suggest you should consult your doctor once.
Normally it takes 2 days or more for antibiotics to act. If not a change of antibiotics depending on the culture and sensitivity report is required.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
