Child Has Fever, Cough. Prescribed Cefixime. High Platelet Count. Reason?

hi there.my 3yo daughter has fever 37-38 for 3days now.usally heats up late afternoon until night. mild cough started the 3rd day, today.no flu ,no nausea,no vomiting, no rashes , no signs of sickness not until she heats up then she gets weak. her platelet count as of today is 179, lymphocytes at 56. doc said to give her cefixime for 7 days but if fever still occurs tom then we have to repeat the cbc to compare the platelet count for possible cause of dengue. my daughter rarely gets sick...pls enlighten me.

Hi ,
Thank you for your query.
I can understand your concern.
The platelet counts are within normal limits.
It seems to be a viral infection.Give her paracetamol and lots of fluids.
keep her on a simple diet and give her rest for some days.
Evaluate her blood tests if the fever persists beyond 5days.
Consult your doctor if the problem persists.
If you have any further queries you are free to consult me.
Hope this answers your query.
Wishing a speedy recovery.
Have a nice day.

Pediatrician Dr. Himanshi Kashyap's  Response
Hi,
Your child is being treated for Upper respiratory Tract infection ,I would suggest continue the medication. If she doesnot respond then she needs to be investigated for not only Dengue but also typhoid and Urine infection.Platelet count at present is normal do not worry .Depending on the infection the platelet and other differential counts of CBC changes with time so be patient the docter would definitely investigate and treat accordingly.
Bye
Take Care.

Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Dr. R.A. SINGH's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.

After reading your post, it seems that your daughter is having upper respiraory tract infection.
Cefexime is an antibiotic and will help in treating the infection, where the cause is bacterial.
You should also give her paracetamol after discussing with her Paeditrician.

Also give her probiotic preparation along with the antibiotic.
Antihistaminic can be given for cough.
You should give her any medicine after discussing with her Paeditrician.

Also give her fresh fruits and vegetables to increase her immunity.
Encourage her to wash her hands before eating as this will prevent entry of germs in body.

I hope this is helpful to you.
Thanks.
