Child has diarrhea and vomiting episodes on, off. What should i do?

My 4-year old son has had diarrhea and vomiting episodes on and off for about 5 days. He has been eating and drinking ok - dehydration doesn't seem to be a concern. In the last day, both vomit and stool have taken on a very distinct burnt-rubber type of odor. I've dealt with a lot of puking and pooping between our 3 kids but never experienced this. Any thoughts?

Thank you for the query.

Every diarrhea which lasts longer than 48 hours needs to be diagnosed with stool test and stool culture. The most common reason of diarrhea in this age is viral or bacterial infection. Blood in stool or undigested parts of food can be also present in the stool.
Other reasons like food allergy or gluten intolerance should be also considered.
Dehydration level can be checked with mouth dryness, low amount of urine (less than 500ml/24 hours).

I suggest you to visit your doctor and have mentioned stool tests performed. Blood work, CRP and abdominal ultrasound should be also done.

Hope this will help.
