Child Diagnosed With Cyclic Vomiting, Taking Zofran. Suggestions?

My 4 yr old daughter has been kind of diagnosed with cyclic vomiting , and i am not too sure that it is that. She has always had vomiting episodes ever since she was a baby. if she has been eating good throughout the day and then either over eats or tastes something she doesn t like she will throw up everything she ate all thru the day. She has not been eating at school, per her teacher and she gags as soon as they get to the cafeteria. Her PCP put her on Zofran and also discovered she had a UTI for the second time now. Should I have him refer me to a GI Dr?

Hi

You have not mentioned how frequently she vomits, how frequently the episodes recur, is she totally symptom free in between.

Cyclic vomiting is a diagnosed after all other causes are ruled out and in between the episodes she will be perfectly fine. Some kids have migraine head aches associated with vomiting.
All metabolic causes, GI causes etc should be ruled out.

I wish to know how is her growth- weight and height?
I also wish to know if her developmental mile stones were okay?

All kids if over fed- are likely to vomit.
If she gags often- her throat should be checked.
Young kids with UTI can present with poor appetite and vomiting. The cause of her recurrent UTI too should be looked into.

A trial of antacids/ medications like Lansoprazole should be given if gastritis or reflux is suspected.

Its better to get a detailed evaluation based on history, examination, needed investigations and consultations.
Zofran (Ondensetron) can be given to control vomiting.

Hope my answer helps you.
Wish your daughter good health.
