Child BCG Vaccinated Was Asked To Undergo Isoniazid. TB Blood Test Not Done. Stop Medicines?

hi
my son 4 yrs(who was BCG vaccinated )had to undergo PPD test (for usual checkup) which showed positive(may be bcoz he

might have rubbed it against something),was asked to undergo isoniazid for 9mnths even though his chest xray was

negative. They didnt do any TB blood test.We have heard that TBskin test can falsely show positive for those who have been

vaccinated in past 5 years but now he has already started medcine,we are wondering if we can taper and stop medicine

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,
Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.
If PPD test is positive, it has to be treated as latent tuberculosis with 2 anti tubercular drugs isoniazid and rifampicin for 6 months.
There is no single blood test to definitely confirm the latent infection.
After taking positive test and clinical picture the doctors usually start medication.
Therefore I suggest you to meet the doctor to discuss your concerns.
And BCG vaccine efficacy is not 100%.
Hope I have answered your query.
Regards.
