Can Weight Gain Be A Side Effect Of Tegretol Generic Tablets?
Hi. my name is Kevin from Kenya.i weigh 105 kgs. and i am well over 6 ft. tall and am 23 yrs. of age about 4 years ago, a neurologist in one of the country s reputable hospitals advised that i should stop taking tegretol generic tablets(i used to take one in the morning and one in the evening) after having been on them for 3 years. since then i put on alot of weight and i was wondering if this is one of the side effects i have to deal with. i have also not experienced any kind of seizure since then.

Tegretol contains carbamazepine which belongs to the group of medications known as anticonvulsant or antiepiletic medications is used to prevent and control seizures. It is also used to relieve certain types of nerve pain like trigeminal neuralgia. This medication works by reducing the spread of the seizure activity in the brain and restoring the normal balance of nerve activity. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor may direct you to start this medication at a low dose and gradually increase your dose to reduce your risk of side effects.
Carbamazepine like Tegretol can also put on pounds. Anticonvulsant medications like Tegretol can produce weight gain. Approximately one fifth of patients gain extra weight while on Tegretol treatment. They work on the brain and appetite control is largely a brain function. Despite gaining weight from this medication, you should not stop taking this medication without your doctor's permission or advice.
