Can Systolic Function Be Improved After Stopping Abraxane Treatment?

I have been taking abraxane biweekly (with a few pauses) for a year. My previousu moderate systolic heart failure has recently gone to acute systolic HF. My oncologist has taken me off abraxane and will switch to some other treatment after a 4 week pause. Is there any expectation of improved systolic function after ceasing the abraxane treament?

Hi,

Abraxane contains a drug called Paclitaxel. It can cause cardiomyopathy(weakening of the heart) by various mechanisms.

The treatment is to stop the medicine causing such thing and start the standard treatment for heart failure.

Generally, the heart recovers in function. The time for such recovery cannot be exactly ascertained but generally, it starts getting better after 3 months.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Sameer Maheshwari, Cardiologist
