Hi Carol,

I can understand your concern. Yes, the incident that you have experienced does happen to patients when they accidently hit the thin mucosa of tongue or gums and develop swelling over the area.

What you are experiencing is just the trauma like a bump forms on head after hitting it on hard surface. The swelling will subside on its own after 7 days. I would not recommend even antibiotics unless it has signs of infection like you develop pus or swelling discharges pus etc.

You can apply ice over the area to reduce swelling and have soft diet that does not hurt the area. However, if you develop infection, then you may need to complete the course of antibiotic prescribed. I am sure you will be fine within a week.

I hope this informaion helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
