Can Statin Drugs And Laxatives Be Taken Together?

I m looking at a 7-day cleanse that uses senna, cascara sagrada and rhubarb root. I take a statin for cholesterol and I will try to reach my doctor s office, too, but I was late reading the box for this stuff. Is there any history on interactions between these laxative compounds and statins?

Hello,

These are stimulant laxatives used in constipation. Of course, there is no evidence of any interactions between statins and senna, rhubarb root.

Regarding cascara sagrada, long term studies are not available to evaluate its interactions and side effects. So, Senna and Rhubarb root are safe undoubtedly with statins.

One more important thing is that all the three stimulant laxatives administration is not recommended at a time. You can go for either 1 or 2 laxatives.

Let me also mention those drugs not to be used or to be used cautiously with stimulant laxatives (senna, rhubarb root):
1) Digoxin
2) Deflazacort
3) Dichlorphenamide
4) Sodium sulfate/potassium sulfate/magnesium sulfate. 5) Diuretics like Frusemide

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
