Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can smoking cause facial numbness? After I smoke my face and ear get numb and my chin and forehead all of this is happening on my right side. Before this a few months back I woke up during the night and my arms and tongue face had gone numb and also my mouth went dry and I went to an urgent care but they told me that it could be an anxiety attack? Could you please give me an idea if smoking has a hand in any of this. If so what the best thing I should do.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
If the symptoms are appearing always after smoking then Yes, it can be a side effect of smoking due to chemicals present in the tobacco and other ingredients used in Cigarette. If it occurs otherwise also then other common causes can be Anxiety or panic attack, Allergic reaction, nutritional deficiency, food allergy, side effects of medication, low blood sugar levels, hyperventilation, etc. At times it can be due to Transient Ischaemic attack if it is associated with other symptoms. So if the symptoms worsen or there are some other symptoms that you experience like weakness, tingling or numbness of one side of limbs, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, etc., then immediately consult an emergency department and get evaluated. For now just keep a watch over the symptoms and take vitamin B complex. For now completely avoid smoking and drink plenty of water. Take sufficient rest and do meditation on regular basis.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
