Can Small Bag With Catheter Be Left Overnight?

My father who is 91 years old, was taken to urgent care on Thursday after his doctor found a urinary tract occlusion. He had a catheter inserted and was sent home with a night and a day bag and told that he would have to switch them daily until he can see a urologist on September 4th.. My question is whether it is all right for him to leave the smaller bag on overnight, since he is not filling up either bag. This would eliminate the step of switching bags, which I am currently performing in a clumsy, unskilled fashion. My other question is whether it is unusual that he was sent home under this circumstance without having being prescribed an antibiotic? Thank you.

Hello and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, let me advise you, that your concerns are very important.
Never switch the bags, as changing the bags,can introduce infection.
No antibiotic is needed, unless he was having a fever.
But, normally, an ultrasound scan abdomen, and blood tests are always done to confirm , what exactly was the cause of the block in passing urine.
If possible, get blood tests like creatinine, sugar, PSA,done .
